Why the Business Community Ought to Care:
“Today, it might be that, you know, Donald Trump thinks he can take over the election system through one of his executive orders. Tomorrow maybe it's the banking system. After that, maybe it's contracts. Maybe he decrees I'm gonna decide which contracts are binding and which contracts aren't binding. So, the legal system is fundamental to how our society operates, how capitalism operates, and everyone should have a stake in that.” –Marc Elias with 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley, May 5, 2025. Why Law Firms Ought to Care:
How Law Firms Targeted by Trump are Responding to White House Pressure
“The question though is what do you do? Right, do you just cower in the corner? Do you just try to disappear? Do you just leave democracy to-- fend for itself? Or do you stand tall and do the best you can every day to-- represent your clients and try to preserve the rule of law?” –Marc Elias with 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley, May 5, 2025. Why New Mexicans Ought to Care:
Here in New Mexico, in the Southwest, we are fortunate that our values have grown out of, not just our country's founding documents, but our own unique history. Overcoming hate and bloodshed is deeply ingrained in us. Because here, through our troubled history, Native, Spanish, European, African, Jewish and Arab cultures have forged ties, including intermarriage. It is here, through painful experience, that we have gained the understanding that tolerance, and respect for other cultures is a strength. It is here, in the Southwest, that we have defended and expanded democratic rule and respect for the Constitution to all members of our communities. And it is here that our vibrant Southwestern culture serves as a model for our diverse nation.
Our teachers, many of whom are tribal leaders, have taught us how important it is to be from a place, a people, and a culture. Through their example, they have also taught us that building bridges between groups is an ideal worth working towards. Those with the deepest roots in our land have shown us the way to the future, a future we don't need to be afraid of. A future of global trade and competition where teamwork is key, and more important than ever. A future where the most cosmopolitan and the most tribal communities not only co-exist but broaden the perspective of each, so that together we see an ever widening vista, one that draws our eyes to what is above and beyond us.
And it is that history that compels us to say "no" when a rich and powerful few try to turn us against one another.
Letter To Invite Others To Join
We invite you to join a coalition of organizations to defend the rule of law, freedom of speech and the right to dignity for all human beings in New Mexico. We are in the early stages of organizing. You can see our website here, www.landofthefreenm.com.
We have been inspired by calls to create such a coalition in the New York Times, in The Bulwark, and by the models of coalitions in other countries that have successfully defended democratic principles against authoritarian takeovers. NATO is an inspiration, as the alliance was formed to promote political and economic stability and be a positive force for peace, not just to react to threats to its member-nations.
We are setting up an infrastructure for a pro-democracy alliance of groups (religious and secular, businesses and labor, law firms, leaders in the medical community, and others) rather than engaging in electoral politics. In this group, members can find opportunities for cooperation and updated information about how the actions of the Trump Administration and Congress will affect New Mexico. Through the coalition, members may find partners to stand with them should there be threats to any one of them.
The Coalition of the Free will become what its members make of it. There is no cost for joining. By adding your group to the coalition, you will be strengthening the bonds of all freedom-loving people in New Mexico.
We believe that together we can accomplish more than we could separately. We are happy to come to your group to talk about this project.
Please email us at landofthefreenm@yahoo.com to find out ways you can protect our freedoms.
Sincerely,
The Leadership Team of Coalition of the Free
